Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How are river ship star ratings assessed?
These ratings are granted by Rivers & Roads. Every ship is rated by our advisors based on feedback or personal inspection.
5-STAR
Premium level ship quality and usually fully inclusive with unlimited drinks and included shore excursions. Generally the best of everything, and apart from spa treatments you may need very little money on the ship so this is a good way to be certain of your budget in advance.
4-STAR
Quality ships but often less inclusive than our 5-Star rating. For instance drinks might only be included at lunch and dinner without an open bar the rest of the time, and you might need to pay extra for shore excursions. To some extent it’s up to you how much you spend on board or on excursions so these can be great money-savers since you only need to pay for what you use.
3-STAR
Generally the same inclusions as 4-star but we have judged that the ship is a bit less grand, sometimes only because the vessel is older. River ships are regularly refurbished though so we might then upgrade the star rating. Like 4-star ships these can be excellent value and the cruise rate might be cheaper. The places you visit remain just the same no matter what ship you are travelling on!
How much validity do I need on my passport for international travel?
You must have at least 6 months validity on your passport at the time of travel. If you do not – you should apply for a new updated passport well before the departure date of your international travel. Please give at least 8 weeks for new passport renewal.
Do I need a visa for my trip? If so, how do I obtain the necessary visa(s)?
Depending on your country of citizenship, and the countries you are visiting, you may or may not require one or more visas. Securing visas is the responsibility of the traveller. We can provide advice on which visas you may require and the best way to apply. In some instances, we may be able to assist for an additional fee.
Yes. We always recommend travellers are covered by a reputable insurance provider. In some cases, travel insurance is compulsory and you won’t be able to participate in certain tours/river cruises without it. Rivers & Roads does not directly issue policies and we take no responsibility for any issues that arise from travelling with/without insurance but we work closely with SureSave and you are able to get a quote and a discount if you book through the Insurance tab on this website.
What should my travel insurance cover?
At a minimum, your travel insurance should be ‘comprehensive’, providing cover against personal accident, death, medical expenses, emergency repatriation and personal liability, with a minimum coverage of AUD$500,000. We also strongly recommend it covers cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects.
The safety of our passengers, leaders and operators is a major priority. With this in mind, we monitor world events very closely and the Tour operator that we represent will make operational decisions based on informed advice from a number of sources, in particular the level of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) travel advisory.
I have a disability. Will this affect my booking with Rivers & Roads?
Having a disability will, in most cases, not have an affect on your ability to travel. However, it is very important that you inform your agent about your particular condition. Some tour operators reserve the right to refuse service to an individual with a disability if you have not informed the operator in advance. Prior knowledge allows your tour director to be prepared to assist you in any way necessary. If you are traveling with a wheelchair you will need to be accompanied by someone that is able to assist you with storage and set-up of the wheelchair.
Are children permitted to travel with your suppliers?
Each tour operator has different age limits and requirements for children. Let your Rivers & Roads agent know at time of enquiry, if you are planning to travel with children and they will be able to (in most instances) create an itinerary that accommodates your whole family. If for any reason we cannot help, we will point you in the right direction.
I am travelling solo – am I the only one?
A large percentage of our travellers are solo travellers so you will not be alone! Be aware though, that many operators do charge a single supplement if you require your own room. Ask your Rivers & Roads agent about your options.
Will I need any vaccinations before I travel?
Medical and vaccination requirements differ between countries and as we are not medical practitioners, we unfortunately cannot advise on this issue. Please see your local GP or travel doctor for details and advice about current vaccination requirements.
What is the best way to carry money whilst travelling?
We recommend having access to money from a variety of sources – cash, cards and travel money cards are all commonly used.
